In the Catholic Tradition, a funeral enables family and friends to join together in a celebration of faith to remember the life of a loved one who has passed. With the promise of everlasting life and the hope of Resurrection in Christ, a Catholic funeral commemorates the journey of the individual from baptism to redemption. A funeral is a time to share the memories of a loved one and support family and friends.
Hawaii Catholic Cemeteries of the Diocese of Honolulu is a charitable organization founded in faith and dedicated to providing education, support and professional services. We are devoted to earning your trust as your community resource for today and tomorrow-at all times guided by faith, cultural traditions and your financial preferences.
Duane Pavao
Director of Cemeteries
Our mission is to provide guidance and wisdom on end of-life services. While we do charge for our services in what has become a very commercial industry, we are committed as a charity to offer innovative programs that provide financial assistance, free options, and programs to meet the needs of our faith community.
We, the Christian Community of Immaculate Conception, Lihue, are called to be Stewards of the Gospel. Centered on the Holy Eucharist, we live our lives on the four pillars of stewardship: hospitality, prayer, formation, and service. This is our call.
Responding to the call of Jesus and inspired by the example of the Blessed Mother, the Immaculate Conception, we live stewardship towards a holy way of life.
1) After leaving the airport, go on to Ahukini Road (Highway 570). At the first 4-way traffic light, continue straight ahead (north) on Ahukini Road.
2) At the next traffic light, turn right onto Kuhio Highway (Highway 56) and move into the left lane, continuing through the next 2 traffic lights.
3) At the 3rd traffic light, Wilcox Memorial Hospital will be on the right. Continue downhill on Kuhio Highway and then uphill over a short bridge. Make the first right past the bridge (our parish sign is on the corner) onto Kapaia Road, which will lead downhill to the Church.
Please inform the Church right away if a member of our parish community has died. We grieve with you and want to help in any way we can. Know that we will be praying for your family. Funerals and memorials are not sacraments, but rather a liturgical celebration of the Church for the life of the deceased.
The Rite of Christian Burial recalls the baptism of our loved one and our gratitude for the consolation of the Resurrection. The gift of faith, witnessed in the celebration of the Eucharist, speaks powerfully at times of loss and grieving.
After you have contacted your chosen mortuary, please have them call our parish office at (808) 245-2432 to confirm a funeral date with the church. After the funeral date has been confirmed with the church, Deacon Bill Farias, Sr., our funeral coordinator, will schedule a meeting with your family to select Mass readings and answer questions you may have regarding the funeral.
When you feel ready, we ask that you contact and meet with our Director of Hawaii Catholic Cemeteries, Mr. Duane Pavao.
Duane can be reached at 808-783-6778, or [email protected]
In 1882, Roman Catholic Bishop Herman Koeckemann purchased land at Kapaia from sugar planter Paul Isenberg on which to build a church for Catholics living in Lihu‘e and Hanama‘ulu. For many decades the churches served Roman Catholic immigrants living in the Lihue, Hanama‘ulu, and Kapaia areas of Kauai associated with the island’s sugar plantation industry.
It is our pleasure to faithfully report that our new Columbaria has been built with and niches installed. Niches are now being purchased or reserved for our community member’s final resting place. In preparation for our upcoming Memorial Day Mass, we invite you to consider referring names to be included on our beautiful new "Cenotaph."
Each of us must sooner or later prepare for our own end-of-life journey. Planning your own memorial and funeral benefits your family, and the community we are part of. Talking about and exploring your personal preferences; having open, honest, family discussions, provides you the time to think through how best to manage your final wishes. It is certainly one of the most loving and significant determinations you can make for yourself, your family, and our Catholic Community at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church - Lihu‘e.
If we talk about it at all, we may use words such as “I want to be buried” or “I want to be cremated.“ Then, when death occurs, our family is left to guess, make decisions, and worst face costs, at a time of great personal stress and grief. Your family could be forced to debate what they think you would have chosen for your Catholic funeral arrangements and memorial at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church - Lihu‘e– if only you were still around to ask.
We often do not remember the names and faces of those who built Immaculate Conception Catholic Church - Lihu‘eor who were Veterans from our community – can you help us remember and honor them at our upcoming Memorial Day Mass?
You can pre-plan your funeral and memorial, and also help us remember Immaculate Conception Catholic Church’s friends and family not yet memorialized. Recognizing the importance of making your own plans, and taking an active role, is the first step.
When you feel ready, we ask that you contact and meet with our Director of Hawaii Catholic Cemeteries, Mr. Duane Pavao.
